Haringey's own extension guide and what it asks of the drawings
For South Tottenham, Haringey publishes the House extensions in South Tottenham SPD (revised). A proposal there is read against it as well as the development plan.
For a house in that area we study the guide before sketching. We then show on the drawings how the depth, height and roof form of the addition respond to it, and where we depart from it, we explain why. An officer who can see the reasoning is far easier to satisfy than one who must reconstruct it.
Elsewhere in the borough the council applies its development plan, which includes the Haringey Local Plan: Strategic Policies 2013-2026 (consolidated with 2017 alterations), with the Development Management DPD, Site Allocations DPD and Tottenham Area Action Plan. We check which document carries more weight for your road.
None of this means the guide is a rulebook for every house. Officers still weigh the individual site, so the drawings include the neighbours' rear walls, their windows and the levels, and the officer can see whether a given addition would work on this plot.

Article 4 directions and conservation areas
Haringey lists 25 Article 4 directions over 25 mapped areas, and 33 conservation areas. Each direction names the right it withdraws, whether that is a front window, a roof alteration or a front wall.
The directions follow particular streets, so two neighbours can have different options. We plot your address against the council's map before quoting design work, and the written result tells you which rights survive.
Historic England lists 289 entries in the borough. A listed house needs listed building consent for most changes, in addition to or instead of planning permission.
The same applies to a loft or rear extension on a house that sits near the boundary of an area. We read the map closely, because a few metres can decide which rule applies, and then give you the answer in writing.
Where a direction does apply, the written result names it, quotes the right it removes and explains what the drawings must then show for the council to accept the scheme.
Houses in multiple occupation
Haringey also controls the conversion of family houses to shared houses through an Article 4 direction. If you plan to let rooms separately, a planning application is needed and the drawings must show every room, its size and the shared kitchen and bathroom provision.
If your plan is a self-contained flat conversion instead, the route and the drawings differ. We establish the intended use at the outset, because it changes the whole brief, and our Lawful Development Certificate service applies only where the existing lawful use supports it.
Haringey's householder record
Haringey decided 689 householder applications in its latest twelve months. It granted 90.3 per cent and decided 94.3 per cent within eight weeks or an agreed extension.
Both numbers are borough averages across all types of home improvement, so treat them as background. They do not predict your case, and we do not offer them as a promise.
Our constraints check looks for an Article 4 direction, a neighbour’s window and the local guide before design starts, because each can change the scheme.
Price, checks and what happens next
Our fee starts at £745 with VAT included and is fixed before you commit. A second chartered technologist checks every sheet before submission. If the council asks for changes, we redraw at no charge until approval.
The council's own fee, £548 for a householder application, is paid to the council. If an application is refused, our planning appeals in Haringey service can review the decision with you.
We run a short process: address check, fixed quote, measured survey, options and your written choice, then the second-technologist check before submission. Drawings are normally ready about a week after the survey.
